The word Raksha means “to protect” and Bandhan means “Bond”, So Raksha Bandhan is a festival celebrating the bond of protection and care between brothers and sisters.

In the festival of Raksha Bandhan sisters tie a holy thread of cotton to the right-hand wrist of their brothers and pray for the long life and Wellness of brothers. The brothers also take the oath to protect and care for sisters every time.

A Holy thread is very powerful in the Hindu religion. It is believed that it protects a person from trouble. A holy thread is often tied on the wrist in the Hindu rituals

In the festival of Raksha Bandhan, sisters mark Tilak of Kumkum on the forehead of brothers. after then they circulate Aarti a light lamp to the face of brothers. then after they offer sweets to the brothers and give blessings.

The religious view of Raksha Bandhan:

During the war with Shishupal, God Shri Krishna was injured by his discus Sudarshan Chakra. he cut his little finger. the wife of Pandav Draupadi tied a piece of cloth from her saree to stop bleeding. God Shri Krishna got very pleased and promised Draupadi to protect every time. when Draupadi was getting insulted by pulling her saree in the front of assembly god Shri Krishna saved her by giving the unlimited clothes.

Another story is that when Indra the King of Gods, was defeated by demon King Bali in a war, then his wife prayed to God Vishnu to help him. God Vishnu gave a powerful bracelet to her. she tied that bracelet to Indra and then Indra became powerful and defeated Bali. Raksha Bandhan is a very popular festival in India.
