Goddess Durga

Goddess Durga is a principal goddess in the Hindu religion. She is the Goddess of power, protection, and strength. She is a divine form of Goddess Parvati, the consort of god Shiva. She is the mother of the universe. Her children are God Ganesha and God Kartikeya. Her vahana (“vehicle” ) is Lion or Tiger. There are several prayers for the Goddess in the Hindu religion. One of them is as follows:

Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu Shakti Rupena Sansthita I

Namastasye Namastasye Namastasye Namo Namah II

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्ति-रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

It means that, hey mother goddess, you are everywhere in the form of power. I bow to you. जो देवी सभी प्राणियों में शक्ति के रूप में स्थित हैं, उनको नमस्कार, नमस्कार, बारंबार नमस्कार है।

She is the remover of evil and fear. According to Hindu beliefs, the goddess Durga is the one who ends durgati which means bad condition. She gives the boon of freedom from the sufferings to the devotees. She is the protector and preserver of the universe. Goddess Durga is represented as a very good-looking fair woman with eight or ten arms carrying the weapons conch, trident, arrows and bow, discus, sword, mace, a flower lotus, and one arm in the form of giving forgiveness and blessings. She is represented as wearing a red colour saree, which is an Indian attire of a woman, and seated on the Lion or Tiger. Goddess Kali, Tara, Chandi, Ambika, Annapurna are the other forms of the Goddess. In the Hindu religion, Goddess Durga is worshipped in the form of Nav- Durga in which nine types of the goddess are worshipped. Devi Shailputri, Devi Brahmacharini, Devi Chandraghanta, Devi Kushmanda, Devi Skanda Mata, Devi Katyayni, Devi Kalratri, Devi Mahagauri, and Devi Siddhidatri are the names of the nine goddesses. Navratri is the festival of Goddess Durga. In this festival, Kalash and clay statues of the Goddess are established. During the festival worship, prayers, chanting, and fasting are done for nine days. On the tenth day, Vijayadashmi is celebrated. The statues on the tenth day of Vijayadashmi are immersed into the river. It is believed that the goddess comes for nine days from her abode mount Kailash and then returned.

The birth story of Goddess Durga:

Goddess Durga was created by the trinity of God Shiva, God Vishnu, and God Brahma to kill the buffalo demon Mahishasur. The demon had a boon to be killed by female power only. So the trinity and all gods created Goddess Durga. All of them gave some power to the Goddess. After a big fight goddess defeated the demon and killed him. Because of this, she is known as ‘Mahishasurmardini’. Goddess Durga is one of the supreme deities in Hinduism. The religious texts of Devi Bhagwat Puran and Devi Mahathmya describe the importance of the Goddess. In the Hindu religion, the Durga puja is not only the festival of worshipping the deities, it is also the festival of worshipping and respecting the woman. During Durga puja, little girls are worshipped by the devotees. Durga puja is a festival of celebrating the woman power and dignity also.

Goddess Durga is the mother goddess of Hindus. She fulfills all the wishes of the devotees and gives blessings.
