Story of the Shakti Peethas:

According to the Hindu Puranas, Devi Sati was the daughter of Prajapati Daksha. She was married to Lord Shiva without her father’s will. Once upon a time, Daksha organized a huge fire sacrifice ceremony. He invited all gods but Devi Sati and Lord Shiva were not invited to the ceremony. Devi Sati thought that there is no need for a formal invitation to go father’s house. She went there. She was treated as an unwanted guest by her father. Daksha also insulted Lord Shiva by abusing him. Devi Sati felt guilty about this and offered her body to the fire called Yoga Agni.
When lord Shiva knew this, he became very angry. He started performing the tandava dance taking the lifeless body of the Devi Sati. The stability of the universe was getting affected by this.
To save the universe and calm down Lord Shiva’s anger Lord Vishnu sent his discus “Sudarshan chakra” to cut the body of Devi Sati. Shaktipeethas are the places where Devi Sati’s body parts or ornaments fell down on the earth.
Hindu followers worship the Shakti peetha with great devotion. In the festivals of goddesses like Navratris, a big crowd of devotees is gathered in these Shaktipeethas. Shaktipeethas are important sites in the Hindu religion.
